UMC strives to keep up with the 65nm race and succeed in moving towards 45nm norms

As we already mentioned in one of today’s news, in addition to TSMC, its competitor, UMC company, is actively preparing for production according to 65-nm technological standards. However, there were rumors that preparations for the transition to the new standards were not going very smoothly – after all, it was not for nothing that the main customers preferred to place their first 65-nm orders with TSMC rather than with UMC. Speaking to investors yesterday, the UMC CEO dispelled these rumors and announced that the number of orders for 65-nm production will exceed the number of orders for 90-nm technological processes next year.

However, in the past quarter, revenue from 65nm orders of the company amounted to only 1% of the total revenue of UMC. The company now has four clients, for which 65nm production is in the pilot phase. However, it is expected that by the end of the year, ten additional applications for the issue of IP under 65nm standards will be processed.

The source reports that UMC has started 65nm production at its 300mm plant in Singapore (UMCi), and the yield of usable chips is comparable to that of the Taiwanese plant – about 90%. In addition, many customers who signed a contract for 65nm production at UMC also expressed their desire to further switch to 55nm technological process in the first half of 2021.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that the transition to finer production standards is an expensive process and requires a large investment in research and development. This year, the company will spend a billion dollars on production development and research and development, and it is expected that this figure will not be lower next year.
