During the Fall Processor Forum this week, AMD CTO Ben Sander gave a talk on the quad-core Opteron server processors (codenamed Barcelona), which will be the first representatives of the K8L architecture.
Barcelona will expand FPU runners to 128-bit, which should significantly improve processor performance in any FP-intensive (floating point) computing, such as media encoding / decoding.
The 65nm Opteron will implement the independence of the operation of two memory controllers, which will allow you to have a larger number of simultaneously open memory pages. It is reported about support for memory types DDR2, DDR3 and fundamental support for FB-DIMM, however, processors will not work with the first generation of FB-DIMM, since the use of this type of memory, according to AMD, does not justify itself yet. The maximum memory capacity in systems with new Opteron will be up to 256 TB (!).
