NEC Electronics has mastered the release of eDRAM memory at 55 nm

According to NEC Electronics, it was the first in the industry to master the technology for the production of embedded dynamic random access memory (embedded DRAM, eDRAM) at 55 nm. UX7LSeD “CMOS-compatible” process is used for memory production.

Developing NEC’s patented metal-insulator-metal (MIM2) technology, the new eDRAM manufacturing process is said to be the first to combine nickel silicide and hafnium silicate film. This combination made it possible to reduce the leakage current when moving to more subtle norms. Optimized for the speed of the resulting semiconductor devices, the new process is suitable for the production of single-chip systems (SoCs) designed for a wide range of products – from mobile communications technology such as cell phones to PDAs and handheld game consoles.

The use of new materials and MIM2 technology has allowed NEC to reduce the size of the eDRAM cell, which, in turn, has a positive effect on the degree of integration of systems that include the new memory. It is important that at the same time the advantages of compatibility with the CMOS process technology and memory performance parameters were preserved.

The use of blocks of 55nm eDRAM memory with a density of 8 MB or more in serial products should begin in the second half of 2021.
