Switching to 450mm substrate: when to wait and what manufacturers think of it?
The semiconductor industry faces challenges all the time. Until now, issues have been successfully resolved, but now the next milestone has appeared on the horizon – the transition to the use of 450-mm silicon substrates.
Historically, it took industry 12 to 15 years to replace one size plate with another. In the past, such changes have been accompanied by the exodus from the market of weaker companies that have failed to reduce costs. So out of 100 manufacturers of 200 mm substrates, only half or even slightly less.
Already, manufacturers are expressing concerns about whether they will be able to survive the next stage, while remaining competitive. So the president of Inotera, not the largest DRAM manufacturer, speaks of the likelihood that his company will be taken over by larger competitors.
Vice President of NXP (formerly known as Philips Semiconductors) Ajit Manocha argues that substrate enlargement is inevitable and predicts that there will be about 10 factories in the world in 2021, which will be owned by companies such as Intel, Samsung, etc.
According to the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS), the production of 450 mm substrates should begin in 2021, analysts’ forecasts are more restrained – some predict that this will happen no earlier than 2021-2025.
The real term is probably somewhere in between. Many companies that have now invested in 300-mm production have not yet paid back their costs far and will postpone innovations for as long as possible. It all depends on the market leaders – how soon they will set an example for others.
