WiMAX World 2021: GaN Transistors and Smart MIMO for Better Connectivity

As we noted earlier, there is a real “gallium nitride fever” in Silicon Valley. However, the fruits of engineers’ enthusiasm for new material can be very useful, in particular, claiming the role of the global leader in broadband communications – WiMAX technology.

So, mentioned this summer (see. See link above) Nitronex has unveiled the first three solutions in a family of high power RF transistors made of gallium nitride (GaN). The new transistors are intended for operation in power amplifiers of WiMAX products in the frequency ranges of 3.3-3.8 GHz and 2.3-2.7 GHz. Note that gallium nitride transistors are made on a silicon substrate and can also be integrated into silicon ICs.

In this case, the integration of powerful transistors is not only unnecessary, but would rather be harmful to the semiconductor chip, because. to. they generate a lot of heat (but less than if they were made of silicon). The first of three new products, NPT35050 (pictured is a test board for this transistor), provides power up to 50 W (in saturation mode at 3.5 GHz – 65 W) with collector-emitter voltage up to 28 V. At the WiMAX World exhibition, where Nitronex transistors were shown, another innovative development was demonstrated – from Navini Networks. The Navini Smart WiMAX solution is interesting in that it attempts to use Smart Beamforming and Smart MIMO technologies (not just Multiple Input-Multiple Output, but with additional conversion of the wave surface of the radiation).

Smart WiMAX claims to achieve data rates up to six times faster than conventional WiMAX. And all thanks to the fact that the converted wave surface provides 12 dB better sensitivity when receiving a signal. In cases where conventional MIMO cannot be received, signals transmitted using Smart MIMO technology are not only reliably received, but also guaranteed to ensure the use of information-intensive 16 QAM and even 64 QAM algorithms. And best of all, all of these technologies can be used in portable devices.

Navini is now supplying Ripwave MX mobile WiMAX platforms operating in the 2.3 GHz, 2.5-2.6 GHz, 3.4 / 3.5 / 3.6 GHz bands and has begun accepting orders for the next generation of Navini solutions. Smart WiMAX 802.16e (Mobile WiMAX), which uses Smart Beamforming and Smart MIMO technologies.
