Lived … the invisibility cloak – created!

When scientists from Duke University announced the theoretical possibility of creating an invisibility cloak this spring, they thought it would take at least five years to create it. However, yesterday a demonstration of a working prototype of such a raincoat took place (you can watch the demonstration on the video, format – Real Video). True, the prototype is so far able to make only a small area invisible – only five square inches (or 32.2 sq. cm) and then only from microwave rays. However, the theoretical ideas presented at the beginning of this year and found their first embodiment this fall are quite viable as a basis for a cloak, which makes an object invisible and in the visible region of radiation too.

The prototype invisibility cloak is crafted from a metamaterial capable of channeling microwave radiation around an object. Metamaterial scientists called artificial composites that interact with radiation like none of the materials known in nature. The university report notes that the composite material contained a series of concentric circles, each of which had different properties (the ability to interact with electromagnetic radiation). By directing radiation around an object, the metamaterial reduces both its reflection and the cast shadow – both of which reduce its visibility to the observer. However, since it is impossible to achieve 100% efficiency in nature, it is obvious that a small shadow, as well as reflection, is still present and will be present in future versions of the metamaterial too.

In addition to the unique properties of the material, there is one more subtlety. Talking about the mathematics of calculations, researchers compare an object placed behind a screen with a small stone lying at the bottom of a shallow stream, or with the tip of a needle resting on a cloth. In the first metaphor, water can flow both around the stone and over it, if the dimensions allow, and in the second, the tip of the needle pulls the fabric until it breaks through. This means that it is not so easy to create a cloak that can make a large object, for example, a person, invisible.

Presumably, the reason why scientists have not yet been able to make an “invisibility cloak” for the visible range of radiation is the impossibility (yet) to create a metamaterial containing concentric circles of appropriate sizes – the diameter of such circles, based on general considerations of the theory of diffraction, should be less diameters of circles used to direct microwave radiation around large objects. However, scientists plan to work in this direction in the future, to create an “invisibility cloak” for the visible range.
