Casio Micronics Places Chips Directly on LCD Panel

Casio Micronics has developed a new generation chip-on-film (COF) technology. With its help, it will be possible to place the LCD panel control chips directly on the panel itself.

As part of the development, the company collaborated with material manufacturers who needed to change the composition of the film in order to increase the reliability of the COF chip, in the design of which copper conductors are placed on the surface of a polyimide (Kapton) film. The pin pitch of the sample created by Casio Micronics is 25 microns.

In addition, it was important to change the coefficient of expansion of the material to be closer to the coefficient of expansion of the glass substrate used in the construction of the LCD panel. Thus, it was possible to reduce the value of the geometric mismatch between the leads when connecting the COF to the electrical circuits of the LCD panel.

Ancillary technologies created during the development of COF include a new etching process that allows etching the sides of the conductor; the process of attaching a chip to a substrate based on the use of a highly insulating resin. Equipment for bonding the chip to the substrate and checking the finished product was also created.
