A feature of the developed material is the use of an “ionic compound”, which may become the key to the production of flexible organic semiconductor films suitable for application to the surface of fabric or paper.

To understand the basic idea behind the development, it is necessary to remember that semiconductors are materials in which there is an excess of free electrons (then we are talking about N-type semiconductors) or “holes” (P-type semiconductor). By combining layers with N- and P-type conductivity, you can get a transistor or diode. Scientists at Cornell University took it one step further and formed a diode from organic semiconductors, which, in addition to electrons and holes, contain free ions (electrically charged molecules). They bonded together two layers of organic semiconductor, one of which contained positive ions, and the other – negative. Conductive layers have been added to the top and bottom, with the top one being made transparent to allow light to pass through.

At the boundary of the layers of the resulting “sandwich”, negatively and positively charged ions migrated from one layer to another until equilibrium was established. This process is similar to that which occurs at the boundary of semiconductors with different types of conductivity, where electrons and holes migrate.

When a voltage was applied to the upper and lower conductive layers, a current began to flow through the boundary of the layers. The migration of ions caused an increase in the potential difference compared to the usual level, which increased the energy of the molecules, which immediately began to emit it in the form of photons of light. In the words of a report published by the researchers, there was “intense light emission” at the layer boundary.

On the other hand, under conditions of bright light (photon flux), the opposite phenomenon took place: the photons were absorbed by the molecules and forced them to “push out” the electrons. The presence of layers with ions of different polarities created a “preferred direction” for the flow of electrons, that is, an electric current appeared.

The new material is reportedly very inexpensive to manufacture as it is obtained by simply “gluing” two films together. The resulting material is flexible, which means it is suitable for a very wide range of applications. So far, metal films are used as conductive layers, but the researchers expect to replace them with films from other materials.

In the diagram, you can see the border between two organic semiconductors containing ions of different polarities. Diffusion between layers creates an energy level difference providing one-way conduction, electroluminescence, and photovoltaic sensitivity properties.
