New power technologies at the December IEDM

In December, in accordance with tradition, the next IEDM (International Electron Devices Meeting) conference will be held. But, contrary to tradition, this conference will address issues that usually remain outside the scope of the IEDM: development of power sources. So far, the IEDM has discussed the natural contribution of the semiconductor industry to the global energy challenge – research to reduce energy consumption.

The source calls the most curious developments the “power transmisson sheet” created by the scientists of the University of Tokyo, and the radioisotope CMOS-compatible piezoelectric generator of electric current on aluminum nitride (AlN), created at Cornell University, capable of powering the wireless sensor for decades.

The principle of operation of a radioisotope battery was formulated a long time ago and has already found application in a number of prototypes, for example, in a “battery” created at the University of Rochester or in an atomic cell created by scientists at Cornell University in 2021. The main innovation is that an atomic battery, created four years ago, can be integrated into a semiconductor microcircuit. This was achieved thanks to advances in the development of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and CMOS-compatible technology for creating piezoelectric generators from aluminum nitride.

AlN generator provides three output ports to power the device. It is important that scientists have been able to demonstrate the safety of using a thin film of a radioactive isotope nickel (Ni-63) for the health of people around the microsensor. The group of researchers notes that to increase the power of the generator (as much as 1000 times), it would be possible to use a film of Promethium (Pm) -147 or tritium, but this would no longer be so harmless to the environment.

Let us briefly recall the principle of operation of radioactive generators: a radioactive film emits ionized alpha particles that fall on a micro-console made of aluminum nitride, which is a dielectric. As the charge accumulates on the surface of the console, its bending increases until it touches the film and the charge carriers recombine, after which the console returns to its original position. This periodic process continues until alpha decay occurs, in this case Nickel-63. And since aluminum nitride is also a piezoelectric, the mechanical stress arising from the bending of the console is transformed into an alternating potential difference, which is used to power the electronic circuit.

In addition to such a safe, but not very effective, due to its indirectness, method of converting the energy of alpha decay, the generator also creates a potential difference (at the other output) by a less indirect method – the separation of electrons and holes at the pn junction when it is irradiated with beta particles (free electrons) appearing, for example, in electronic beta decay (neutron-> proton + electron + antineutrino). Despite the relative safety, the prototype of the power generator provides an acceptable energy density (105 kJ / cubic. m) with a half-life of Ni-63 of 100.2 years.

The “feeding sheet” of the University of Tokyo researchers, in turn, is the development of wireless power technologies, which once became the central plot of our April Fools’ comic reports. But in the case of the Japanese design, everything is serious: a flexible sheet 1 mm thick and weighing 50 g is divided into 64 cells (8×8) containing location sensors and emitters that allow powering the devices located on the sheet. The effective area of ​​the radiators is 21×21 cm.

The location of an object on a sheet is determined by electromagnetic interaction using organic transistors, which allows it to be connected to a power source only when it is on the corresponding cell. Power is transmitted from copper inductors connected by plastic MEMS switches (printed on the sheet). The power transfer efficiency is reported to be 62.3% and the maximum power is 29.3W.
