Japan Institute NAIST (Nara Institute of Science and Technology) presented technology for growing polycrystalline silicon using protein. It is expected to provide the ability to form layers of semiconductor material on the surface of plastic, glass and other materials. Compared to previously developed methods, the new approach allows the growth of silicon crystals with larger particles, while simultaneously reducing the amount of catalyst.

Nickel is commonly used as a catalyst for growing polysilicon. The new technology involves the use of nickel encapsulated in a protein shell, the outer and inner diameters of which are approximately 12 and 7 nm, respectively. Ferritin protein is used as a shell material.

Ferritin with a nickel “core” inside is brought into contact with a layer of amorphous silicon to disperse nickel in it. The protein is then removed using ultraviolet light or ozone. The main advantage over existing technology (vacuum deposition or spraying) is the more even distribution of nickel. As a result, large crystals are formed – from units to tens of microns. By changing the concentration of the “nickel-ferritin” solution, the scientists managed to change the properties of the polycrystalline layer, in particular, to control the size of the crystals.

According to NAIST experts, nickel consumption in the new technology is reduced by two to three orders of magnitude (!) compared to available technologies.

Several obstacles remain on the way to commercializing the development. One of them is the high cost of ferritin. However, ferritin prices are expected to decline once mass production rolls out.
