Intel: the future of physical computing belongs to multi-core processors

There is no need to doubt that today and this week will be held under the sign of Intel – there is simply no other way in the computer world during IDF.
Ahead of the forum, TG Daily interviewed Ronen Zohar, Intel’s testing and analysis team member. The conversation was about the use of multi-core processors in accelerating physical computing.

According to Zohar, realistic physics in games requires developers to double the complexity of the part of the program code that is responsible for such calculations. Nevertheless, the first steps are already being taken to optimize these processes for multi-core CPUs. As often happens, the first line was the notorious Futuremark company, which developed a technical demonstration of Ice Storm Fighters, showing that it is not at all necessary to spend money on a separate PPU (physical accelerator).

The demo is designed specifically for Intel quad-core processors. Kernels can be dynamically enabled / disabled during scene rendering, which drastically affects performance. What is the essence of the approach to creating such scenes? The Zohar replies that each of the cores has its own task: calculating objects, physics, scene architecture. At the same time, while one frame is displayed on the display, free cores are already working on calculating the next.

The specialist also promised in the near future that there will be progress in the artificial intelligence of game characters, however, the example was not convincing: “With a quad-core processor, games will be filled with realistic things, for example, rabbits will run around the game scene, realistically doing what rabbits usually do.”. In our opinion, for this level of realism, you can do without Kentsfield :).

As for the progress in the field of displaying explosions, without which a rare computer game can do, then we are promised in the near future 60 thousand fragments from the explosion, plausibly calculated by the forces of the central processor. At the same time, the efficiency of the CPU is promised to be even higher than that of a physical accelerator due to lower delays inside the processor than between a separate board and other system components.

Summing up, I would like to say that the Zohar deliberately omitted those moments that would make the future of multicore processors less bright, the main of which is the much lower performance of FPU (floating point unit), which plays almost a key role in the calculation of physics. However, perhaps optimization will play a role, and we will still see believable physics next year without spending $ 300 on a separate PPU. Do not forget, however, that the first Kentsfield is unlikely to cost less than $ 800 ..
