EYCIN: controlling your computer with your eyes
The well-known German Fraunhofer Institute, to which, recall, we owe the MP3 compression format, is now, among other projects, engaged in the development of a new PC control interface.
Scientists called their brainchild the Eye-Controlled Interaction (EYCIN) system, which can be translated as an eye-controlled interaction system. It is expected to find its use in allowing people with motor disabilities to control their computers. In addition, EYCIN will be useful in areas where it is imperative for PC technicians to have their hands free for other purposes.
The idea is not so new, similar developments are used in some portable devices, however, the problem of interaction between the user and the graphical shell of the PC through eye movements remains problematic. Involuntary eye movements can be misinterpreted and converted into cursor movements, and a little more than the developers intended, the visual delay on any object on the desktop can be perceived as a signal to press the pointer on the object.
Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute say that they have managed to create the most accurate system that interprets user commands to avoid false positives.
The EYCIN system consists of a monitor with a camera attached to it that follows the user’s eye and specialized recognition software using a triangulation algorithm. The cursor moves with the gaze, and stopping the last for half a second is equivalent to a mouse click. The active button will change color twice before being pressed, giving the user the option to deselect.
When using the development together with the standard Windows interface, where many of the active elements are signed, EYCIN still faces certain difficulties – a large number of active areas contain rather long inscriptions that the user willy-nilly reads, stopping his gaze. This problem can be solved only in cooperation with the developers of the graphical interface, who could make areas with text information inactive. In addition, the definition of the field of view works more accurately in the center of the display than at the edges, so it is on the sides of the button that the EYCIN developers would like to do more.
Currently, the development of the EYCIN program is constrained by the lack of commercially available security cameras, whose operating range would exceed 1-1.5 meters. It is with the appearance of such hardware components of the complex that the development can be implemented more widely.
In conclusion, we note that just two days earlier, HP patented another unusual way to control a computer – using sensors worn on the legs.
