Sun begins development of Niagara 3 processor
ZDNet reports that Sun Microsystems engineers are currently busy building the Niagara 3 processor, the third reincarnation of its ambitious architecture.
John Fowler, executive vice president of Sun’s server division, confirmed this information in an interview, saying that development is being carried out taking into account 45nm technological standards.
Recall that 90nm UltraSparc T1 (Niagara) processors are already on sale, and the first servers using 65nm Niagara 2 should hit the market in the second half of 2021.
The first generation processors include 8 cores, each of which is capable of processing 4 threads of instructions simultaneously, Niagara 2 will increase the total number of processed threads from 32 to 64 with the same number of cores.
Niagara 3 will continue the trend, in addition, it will improve the performance of the memory controller, which will increase the bandwidth of the memory subsystem, and will reduce its latency.
Sun also paid attention to the issues of energy consumption – it is promised that in Niagara 3 the performance per watt will be the highest.
Fowler declined to comment on the timing of the new Sun server processors.
