Rambus is preparing PCI Express 2.0 solutions for production according to 65nm standards

As we already reported, during the fall Intel Developer Forum (IDF), Rambus has already demonstrated prototypes of PCI Express 2 physical layer controllers.0 (Gen2). Yesterday the company held its own forum in Taiwan, where it once again demonstrated its PCI-E 2.0 solutions, and also announced new technical details and release dates.

So, according to Rambus, PCI-E 2.0 solutions will be manufactured at the factory of the Taiwanese contract manufacturer TSMC in compliance with the 65nm technical process, starting from the middle of next year. Final PCI-E 2 specifications are expected to be available by then.0 slated for PCI-SIG completion by the end of this year. The prototypes demonstrated at the forum are built on the basis of revision 0.9 of the standard and are produced according to 90nm standards.

By the way, it should be noted that Rambus is not a member of PCI-SIG and does not plan to join this organization in the near future.

PCI Express Specification 2 is expected to double throughput from 2.5 GT / s (Billion Transfers Per Second) to 5 GT / s. At the same time, the synchronization cycle will be halved, which presents some problem for IC developers. Rambus has allegedly managed to deal with emerging issues and plans to provide its controller to vendors of chipsets and GPUs.

As mentioned just above, now Rambus is producing PCI-E 2.0 solutions at TSMC factories according to 90nm standards. In the middle of next year, by the beginning of mass production, PCI-E 2.0 will be performed according to 65nm standards, and in 2021 – according to 45nm technological process. However, who will manufacture them for Rambus at 45 nm is not yet known.

In addition to TSMC, Rambus cooperates with its competitor, UMC, which produces PCI-E 1.0 180nm, 150nm and 130nm process controllers. At the request of customers, Rambus is also ready to develop PCI-E Gen2 solutions with production at the UMC factory. Rambus customers on PCI-E solutions include companies such as SiS, XGI and ULi, now part of NVIDIA. The first two are placing their orders with UMC, and ULi acquires PCI-E PHY-logic ICs produced by UMC for Rambus.
