American scientists used plastic instead of metal in batteries

At Brown University (r. Providence, USA) a prototype of a new hybrid battery was created, in which plastic is used as a conductor material, not metal, as usual.

As you know, conventional batteries are not capable of delivering a large pulse of energy. In turn, capacitors can do this, but they are not suitable when you need to store a charge for a long time and give it away gradually. Hybrid devices combine the best sides of capacitors and batteries.

When developing a new system for storing energy, scientists used polypyrrole, a chemical compound that can conduct an electric current. Incidentally, the discovery and development of polypyrrole and other conductive polymers led to the awarding of three scientists with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000.

In the course of the experiment, the tip of a thin strip of gold-coated plastic film was coated with polypyrrole and a substance that can influence its conductive ability. The process was repeated with a second strip, this time using a different material that affects the conductive properties of polypyrrole. Then the two strips were held together, separated by a thin membrane to prevent short circuits.

The resulting hybrid is able to quickly charge and discharge, releasing a large amount of energy, like a capacitor. As an alkaline battery, a hybrid can store a charge and deliver it to the consumer for a long time. During testing, the new power supply doubled the capacity of a comparable double-layer capacitor, and 100 times the energy of a conventional alkaline battery.

An important advantage of the new battery is its small size. In fact, the thickness of the hybrid is almost equal to the thickness of the outer protective shell. This opens up tempting prospects for designers of mobile technology: for example, a cell phone battery can become something like a thin case. Scientists believe that hybrids can even be embedded in flexible materials, such as fabrics.
The prototype has a big drawback – after several charge-discharge cycles, its capacity drops dramatically. However, research continues, and it is hoped that this obstacle will be removed by the time hybrids are commercialized.
