What Hitachi Promised When Celebrating Hard Drive Anniversary?

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi) has approached the anniversary of the hard drive with a record value of storage density – 345 Gbps. inch (approximately 53.5 Gbps per sq. cm). This is more than two and a half times higher than mass-produced drives today. Such a high value is obtained using perpendicular recording technology (PMR). So far, it has been demonstrated only in laboratory conditions, however, by 2021 Hitachi expects to use today’s developments in serial products. This means that 3.5-inch desktop drives will reach 2TB; 2.5-inch laptop hard drives will come up to the 400 GB mark; and 1.8-inch – 200 GB. In terms of near-term plans, Hitachi promises to release a 3.5-inch 1TB drive in the first half of next year.

In the longer term, Hitachi believes PMR technology will be enhanced with patterned media and thermally-assisted recording. The introduction of these two technologies will determine the development of hard drives over the next ten or twenty years. As a result, for example, by 2021 the density will reach 4 Tbit per sq. inch (620 Gbps per sq. cm). This will make it possible to manufacture a 3.5-inch hard drive with a capacity of 25 TB. As the maximum density mark, the value of 100 Tbit per sq. inch (about 15 TB per sq. cm), which corresponds to 0.65-PB (petabytes) of volume in a 3.5-inch form factor.

What is the main obstacle to drives of this unimaginable size?? Increasing storage density leads to the fact that the areas of the magnetic layer used for storing data are getting smaller and smaller. At a certain stage, they decrease so much that they lose stability at room temperature. To solve this problem, it is suggested to use patterned media and thermally-assisted recording.

What is the essence of these technologies, so to speak, on the fingers?

At the current stage of development, one bit of information is stored in about 100 microscopic formations in the carrier layer – magnetic domains. Profiling or structuring the media allows you to create isolated islands, each of which will also be used to record one bit of information. Due to the insulation, the size of the sections can be reduced while maintaining temperature stability.

Heat recording involves the use of material whose domains are stable at room temperature. To record information, such a medium will need to be locally heated using a laser beam just before interacting with the magnetic head.
