US is close to building a supercomputer for space

Researchers at the University of Florida and Honeywell Aerospace are designing and building a spacecraft computer that claims to outperform any computer currently used in the field by at least 100 times.

The “space supercomputer” should make its first flight as part of the NASA test program, in 2021, aboard an ST8 unmanned rocket.

The need for more computing power is explained by the increased volume of data coming from scientific equipment installed on spacecraft.

It is interesting that the on-board computers of spacecraft are noticeably lagging behind the rapidly developing computer technology on Earth in terms of performance. The fact is that they have to work in difficult conditions, and the developers are concentrating their efforts on other characteristics, in particular, on protection from cosmic radiation, which has a detrimental effect on the performance of electronic equipment. As a result, although satellites and manned vehicles are equipped with increasingly sophisticated sensors and instruments to collect information, most of this data has to be sent to ground-based centers for processing. Unfortunately, bandwidth limitations of communication channels come into force here.

To solve this problem, the developers decided not to mechanically protect the computer from radiation, but to compensate for the harmful effect on the operation of the processor and other nodes by means of special, fault-tolerant software that can automatically diagnose equipment failures. The development was named Dependable Multiprocessor (roughly translated as “reliable multiprocessor system”).

For vehicles located far from Earth, more powerful computers would allow them to analyze information on the spot and make decisions without waiting for the exchange of data and commands with the control center. As you move away from the planet, the relevance of commands coming from the ground operator decreases and does not allow you to respond in real time to short-term or unforeseen situations.
